The Tri-Star Grassroots Bursary League winner Sophia Icke and I had a great training session, thanks to the generous scheme Saracens have put in place. Sophia and her Mum Sue travelled up from Toaster with her lovely chestnut horse Think Tank Think. The two of them are a great partnership and had a phenomenal season at BE100 level last year, rarely being out of the top ten.
2018 see’s Sophia and Think Tank Think heading to the prestigious Mitsubishi Badminton Grassroots Championships for the 2nd year running. With this as their major Spring event, the focus for our session was to fine tune a few aspects, but not change anything to affect their build up. With the flat work, we worked on really stretching the horse long and low as a good way to start a session. We then went through a few bits in the test, which looked really promising, before running through some warm-up ideas to work out what was best for them and to give Sophia a plan.
Then onto the jumping, where again the partnership looked really great, but a couple of things we worked on was to re-emphasise keeping completely straight to a fence and we also looked at the quality of the canter. I had Sophia in perhaps a more forward rhythm then she was used to, but she could then really feel the power and the scope they had in the bigger canter which was great.
Overall a really positive session and hopefully a few useful pointers for Sophia to take with her to Badminton Grassroots and beyond!
