Oatfeed is a rich source of beta-glucan which has been shown to have positive effects on the immune system, glycaemic response post feeding and on digestive health (Lindinger et al., 2017). Beta-glucan is a soluble fibre source which acts as a coating for the stomach lining and can help to regulate sugar release from the digestive system. It has also been shown to support immune response in performance horses (Paap & Roberti, 2014).
Carbohydrates (cereals) have been shown to aid in muscle glycogen repletion when fed post exercise. Studies have shown that horses receiving a cereal based meal following high level exercise will replenish muscle glycogen stores faster than horses fed a solely fibre-based meal (Lacombe et al., 2004). Icelandic Mix contains micronised barley to aid in recovery post exercise and repletion of muscle glycogen stores to support optimal athletic performance.
