ICELANDIC MIX is a specific feed formulated for Icelandic horses at maintenance through to light and medium work. It is low in sugar and starch but nutrient-dense with respect to the levels of quality protein, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Traditional horse and pony feeds tend not to be suitable for Icelandic horses due to the higher energy, starch and sugar levels together with higher minimum feeding rates. This significantly contributes towards excess body condition and increases the risk of health issues such as Laminitis. When fed alongside optimum levels of forage, Icelandic Horse Mix will provide a balanced ration and help to maintain optimum health, coat, skin and hoof condition, immune function and recovery post exercise.

ICELANDIC MIX uses a variety of different energy sources, with the emphasis on using digestible "Super-Fibres" to provide a safe source of energy that is low in sugar and starch. A low inclusion of micronized barley helps to support horses that are in a regular work programme and require a slightly higher energy level to support their work and recovery post training.

The inclusion of soya oil and linseed meal helps to support stamina, as well as helping to maintain good skin and coat condition. Icelandic Mix has high quality protein ingredients to ensure optimum provision of essential amino acids. This helps to support cell renewal, tissue and muscle repair post exercise.

There is a full spectrum of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants included to maintain health and vitality and yeast to support optimum fibre utilization and digestive health.

It is well documented that inappropriate dietary management and insufficient exercise are some of the main causes of equine obesity. Any horse or pony that carries excess body weight over a prolonged period will suffer from health problems such as increased stress on the cardiovascular and skeletal systems and most importantly an increased risk of laminitis and other associated metabolic disorders.

Often these types of horses are fed inappropriate rations and are likely to be missing out on important vitamins, minerals and quality protein sources. ICELANDIC MIX was developed through working with Icelandic horse owners across the UK and Europe and will provide a high level of nutrition, whilst meeting caloric needs, helping to aid in correct weight management. Essential amino acids such as lysine and methionine are also included to ensure the provision of quality protein to aid in muscle function and development. A yeast culture is also included to support optimum fibre utilization and digestive health, allowing a lower feeding rate when compared to mixes and cubes that are formulated for other breeds of horses and ponies.

Oatfeed is a rich source of beta-glucan which has been shown to have positive effects on the immune system, glycaemic response post feeding and on digestive health (Lindinger et al., 2017). Beta-glucan is a soluble fibre source which acts as a coating for the stomach lining and can help to regulate sugar release from the digestive system. It has also been shown to support immune response in performance horses (Paap & Roberti, 2014).

Carbohydrates (cereals) have been shown to aid in muscle glycogen repletion when fed post exercise. Studies have shown that horses receiving a cereal based meal following high level exercise will replenish muscle glycogen stores faster than horses fed a solely fibre-based meal (Lacombe et al., 2004). Icelandic Mix contains micronised barley to aid in recovery post exercise and repletion of muscle glycogen stores to support optimal athletic performance.
