Feeding The Competition Horse With Enduro-Performance

Helenbates Enduro

5* event rider Helen Bates contacted our nutrition team for advice on what to feed one of her event horse who needed a palatable feed to provide energy for the work he was doing. We recommended our Enduro-Performance, and Helen has come back to us with the feedback below:

I first started using Enduro 4 years ago, recommended from the Saracen nutrition team, when searching for a feed for one of my event horses. I needed something palatable that would give him long lasting slow release energy, as well as not upsetting his hind gut as he had suffered from ulcers in the past. He thrived on the enduro, and I ended up moving all of my horses to Saracens as a result. Enduro is my first pick for the upper level horses, including my 5* horse Carpe Diem. I find the fitter horses in particular can get fussy, but it’s so important they keep eating, so a palatable feed is essential. Enduro also includes natural supplements which help improve recovery and reduce fatigue which is so important post cross country. I can’t recommend enduro enough for the high level competition horses!

Enduro-Performance is based on super fibres and oil to reduce the reliance on starch and therefore reduce the risk of metabolic disorders and ‘fizzy’ behaviour associated with high starch levels. This combination of slow release energy sources provides long lasting energy release, giving a controlled performance, because they are absorbed into the bloodstream more slowly than cereals. Highly digestible fibre plays an important role in ensuring that the horse has adequate water intake throughout work/competition by providing a water store in the gut, therefore reducing the effects of dehydration. Some cereals (crushed oats, barley flakes and maize flakes) are included to give some instant energy and ‘sparkle’ when needed. Enduro-Performance is fully fortified with vitamins and chelated minerals. These minerals are more readily available to the horse than traditional inorganic minerals, because they are bound to a protein molecule that is more easily absorbed during digestion. Chelated minerals can complement natural stress resistance and help the immune system, whilst improving coat bloom, and skin and hoof quality. Elevated levels of antioxidants (Vitamin E and Selenium) are included to support muscle function and immune function, along with a maintenance dose of electrolytes when feeding recommended amounts. The inclusion of a live yeast helps support a healthy environment in the hindgut, which is especially important in performance horses that maybe fed lower forage and higher concentrate feed rations. Yeast also has many other benefits including optimum feed utilisation and maintenance of appetite in the performance horse.
