Feeding The Shire Horse

Whilst ensuring that your horse has plenty of forage, we understand how important it is to feed each horse as an individual. Saracen Horse Feeds have a wide range of feeds that are formulated on different ingredients to provide the correct balance between workload, weight maintenance and temperament.

Our Heavy Weight Expert Nic Read works alongside Emma Green, rider and producer of Bordley House Norman and Westfield Calendar Girl, to ensure that they both receive the best diet suited to them as individuals. Bordley House Norman and Westfield Calendar Girl are both owned by Lindy Winship.

The championship at the Shire Horse Show saw the stablemates battling for prime spot however feeding was key to the success to each of the horses to ensure that they were able to perform to the best of their ability.

feeding the young shire horse

Bordley House Norman is a 5-year-old giant (approximately 19h) is in his first ridden season.

“He was shown a handful of times in 2021 and slowly backed as a late 4-year-old due to his size. At the back end of 2021 he had a growth spurt which has put him over 19 hands so balance, co-ordination and filling out is a slow process but he’s well worth the wait! I have been using Saracen Horse Feeds for a number of years, with great effect, so I sought advice from Nic Read, and to support Norman we decided to feed him Show Improver Mix and Equi-Jewel alongside his forage which gives him the controlled weight gain and enough energy to sustain the training while helping him to bloom.

Following his work, he is fed Recovery Mash to aid his rehydration and give him a boost which he adores.”

feeding the inner diva

“Westfield Calendar Girl is our open horse and is ever the diva! She over thinks and over dramatizes everything but she is the epitome of class in a ring of heavy horses so we have to keep her thinking on the right track to bring out her talent. She is fed on Saracen Re-Leve to keep her focused and also give her the right amount of energy she needs to work through her to do list! She looks like an athlete and her coat gleams and arriving at the show she looked thrilled to be there which is always a good sign. She was forward and never needed to be asked twice and rode like a Ferrari giving her the top spot in the open ridden.”
