Feeling Confused By Feed?
Let the Saracen Nutritional Team help
Who helps you decide what to feed your horse? A friend? Your instructor? Online forums? Your vet? Have you ever considered contacting a feed helpline for nutrition advice? Maybe you think you will only be advised the most expensive feed they sell or something that will not be suitable?
When you call the Saracen Horse Feeds Nutrition Helpline, you will be asked a series of questions about your horse to ensure that not only is the best possible feed from the range advised, but also that other aspect of your horse's diet and management are taken into consideration to ensure you get the best result from your new ration. We regularly speak to owners with horses of all shapes and sizes, from retired ponies to high level performance horses, and each and every horse is as important to us as the next.
LET'S TALK ABOUT FORAGE
The first part of the diet that will be discussed is forage. Forage is the most important part of any horse's ration, but it is the part that is most often overlooked! We regularly speak to customers who are more concerned about their horse's hard feed, even though their horse is not eating enough hay on a daily basis. We will discuss with owners the minimum amount of forage their horse should be eating, taking into account grass, hay and haylage intake. We also often discuss with owners how to encourage their horse to eat more forage if they are fussy or uninterested in eating, something which is becoming increasingly common.
HOW DO YOU CHOOSE THE RIGHT HARD FEED?
Once the forage element of the diet has been discussed we will move onto the hard feed, which should always compliment the forage aspect of the ration. When suggesting the hard feed we will take into account a variety of factors. Does the horse need to gain or lose weight? Does he need more help with muscle development? How much work is he in? Does he need more stamina or instant energy? Does he have any veterinary issues? The recommended hard feed will be fully explained so you understand why it has been suggested over other feeds in the range.
ADDITIONAL EXTRAS
The final part of the ration to discuss is whether any supplements are required. Apart from salt, supplements are not normally needed to be fed alongside Saracen products. However, there may be cases when supplements are required and this is something we can discuss with you and tailor to your horse's specific requirements.
