VETERAN CUBES are a high quality, highly digestible cube designed specifically for the needs of the older horse or pony. VETERAN CUBES are manufactured so that they are softer than other traditional cubes, whilst remaining dust free. This will help horses that have trouble chewing due to poor teeth. For those horses with teeth problems, VETERAN CUBES can be soaked to produce a soft, palatable mash.

VETERAN CUBES are based on "Super-Fibre" sources which provide a similar level of calories to that of cereals but reduce the reliance on cereals in the diet helping to keep starch levels low. The combination of oil and digestible fibre provides slow-release energy helping to avoid the fizz that can be associated with cereal-based diets.

VETERAN CUBES also contain essential antioxidants such as Vitamin E, which mop up free radicals helping the horse to maintain normal muscle function and decrease recovery time after exercise. Antioxidants also benefit the older horse through maintenance of normal metabolic systems and immune function, thus offering the veteran horse the best protection to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. The addition of a mint flavour makes these cubes highly palatable.

VETERAN CUBES include high-quality protein sources which are required by the older horse and are fully fortified with vitamins and chelated minerals. These minerals can help with complementing natural stress resistance and the immune system, plus improving coat bloom and skin and hoof quality.

Feed Body weight Frequency
1.0 - 2.0kg 200-400kg Per day
2.0 - 3.5kg 400-600kg Per day
3.5 up to 5.0kg >600kg Per day
These feeding rates are intended as a guide only. Always try to feed a minimum of 1.5% of bodyweight as good quality forage.

N.B These feed levels give the minimum and maximum feeding rates for each range of bodyweights (BW), ie a pony of any BW between 200-400kg could be fed between 1-2kg per day depending on their requirements.

Saracen Horse Feeds was the first British feed manufacturer to develop a ration specifically for the older horse back in 1993. As horses age, the efficiency of their digestive tract begins to reduce resulting in the need for a specifically formulated veteran ration to support the maintenance of optimum body condition. Saracen developed the Veteran range to meet this demand due to the growing population of horses over 16 years of age in the UK and in Europe today.

The ration for Saracen VETERAN CUBES was ‘updated’ in 2016 to include higher levels of quality protein, and to improve the specification of the vitamins and minerals so that they met all the needs of the older horse and pony.

Linseed is included within the Veteran Cubes formulation. Linseed is the richest vegetable source of Omega-3 fatty acids. Increasing dietary levels of Omega-3 fatty acids can have extremely beneficial effects on coat and skin condition. Omega-3 fatty acids can also aid in joint health and mobility.

Oatfeed is a rich source of beta-glucan which has been shown to have positive effects on the immune system, glycaemic response post feeding and on digestive health (Lindinger et al., 2017). Beta-glucan is a soluble fibre source which acts as a coating for the stomach lining and can help to regulate sugar release from the digestive system. It has also been shown to support immune response in performance horses (Paap & Roberti, 2014).
